When Do Whitetail Rut in South Texas

South Texas has the latest rut in the state. This is due to the fact that it is the most southern part of the state (obviously). Using data from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the rut is from Nov 9 all the way to Feb 1st.

When is Peak Whitetail Rut in South Texas

The peak whitetail rut in South Texas is Dec 16th. Therefore we would recommend scheduling your guided whitetail hunt within a two week period of this date if you enjoy hunting rutting bucks on the move.

How To Use the Rut to Your Advantage

Since bucks are at their most active during the rut, there are a couple of tactics to use to bring bucks into your blind.

  1. The first is to use rattling antlers to draw other bucks in. The noise replicates bucks clashing over breeding rights for a specific female and can bring other bucks into the area to challenge them.

  2. The second is to talk with your guide to ensure that the blind you are hunting has lots of does around it. If you find the does, the bucks will come during the rut.

  3. The last tip is to hunt over spots that have active scrapes around. The scrapes are a bucks way of advertising that they are in the area and ready to breed. They will urinate in the scrape to leave their scent as a marker for does.
